a lot of articles about this are written really confusingly. there are two issues at stake here, right?

firstly, there’s the issue of whether it is “unethical to use human embryos for the production of stem cells for commercial applications [in situations where the stems cells are not] used for the benefit of the embryo itself” - obviously, no, it’s not unethical at all, because they’re embryos and they don’t give a crap

secondly, there’s the issue about whether people”should be able to patent an invention that comes out of research involving the use of human embryonic stem cells”. this is far more contentious ethically, as it involves patenting technologies based on human DNA - it’s already done in some circumstances, but I can understand people’s shakiness about it (I dunno how the patents work, and how often they’re pooled, but I can imagine it can be detrimental to research to have them).

Can their next step be to ban all patents?  That I would be fine with.  Shit guys, cus patents are never abused so that companies can make money out of a medicine while at the same time denying poor people treatment?  Communise that shit.

U.S. drone strike kills 16 year old kid. He was an American citizen
News reports have been saying he was 21, but that’s a lie, his family says he was 16. Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was born in Denver in 1995. He was the son of Anwar al-Awlaki, a recruiter for al-Qaeda, who was targeted and killed in another drone strike last month. His father was also a U.S. citizen. Abdulrahman’s grandfather released a statement yesterday:

“To kill a teenager is just unbelievable, really, and they claim that he is an al-Qaeda militant. It’s nonsense. They want to justify his killing, that’s all.”

Abdulrahman’s 17 year old cousin was also killed. The family claims the attack targeted an outdoor barbecue, and several teenagers were killed.
Most reactions I’ve seen consider this a new precedent, in the way the U.S. handles its citizens. But this isn’t new. Government assassinations of U.S. citizens goes back to at least 1969, when the FBI murdered Fred Hampton in his bed as he slept.

god shed his waste on theeeee

Too bad there’s 10 years of dead teenagers by American hands- opps don’t forget the raped teens too. Also orphaned teens, traumatized teens….
